A woman remains in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers after being involved in a double shooting behind a church in the Tropical Gulf Acres area of South Punta Gorda on Sunday morning.
Patricia was found under a tree behind Friendship United Methodist Church suffering from what Charlotte County Sheriff’s detectives believe were self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head.
A white male was found dead, lying next to Patricia under the tree. He had also suffered what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head.
Two weapons, a rifle and a shotgun, were found with the pair.
The identity of the man has not been confirmed due to a lack of dental records and fingerprints but the body is believed to be that of Patricia’s husband, Bruce Wright.
“We’ve had double suicides before, but usually they’re done in their own homes,” said Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Carpenter.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. Why a church? Thinking parishioners would be coming and find them? I don’t know,” Carpenter said.
The couple was married at the church nearly 40 years ago. They owned property on 7th Avenue, just north of the church. However, neighbors say the property has been vacant for several years.
They had recently traveled from their home in Las Vegas back to Punta Gorda. It is believed they were saying at a motel while they were in town.
According to the Charlotte County Property Appraiser’s Office, ownership of their property had been transferred in early July.
